"Look!" He said. "The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them! Genesis 11:6 (NLT)
When Moses scribed the account of the tower of Babel, I am quite sure that he never imagined us referring to it in the year 2010. In his time of communion with God, he learns of an earth that pre-existed himself. The story itself is timeless and its principles are applicable to all that will adhere to them.
After the flood, the earth has been repopulated by the family of Noah. Everyone is related by blood. They have learned the same values. They share the same views and ideas. As they begin to travel toward the east, they all decide to build a tower that leads up to God. Their purpose is, " to make a name" for themselves. They begin to make bricks and seal them with mortar. As the building process progresses, God takes notice. The Almighty makes some very powerful statements about the people. He says, "The people are united and they speak the same language." Because of these factors, the Lord says, "nothing shall be impossible to them." Most people know the end of the story; God Himself came down and confused the language. With the ensuing misunderstandings, the people scattered and the tower project was abandoned.
There are many poignant points in this story. There are facts such as the people having one mindset and that they share the same goals. However I feel that the most moving aspect is when Almighty God declares that," NOTHING will be impossible for them!" The power of togetherness was so strong that only the God of heaven could disrupt them. He did not allow the devil to wreck havoc as in the case of Job. Jehovah God is the only One powerful enough to overthrow the intentions of a people with the same determination.
What comfort that should be for us who are related by the blood of Christ. Those people were working to make a name for themselves. We today are striving to lift the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. If we will allow the same mind; the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5) to dwell in us, NOTHING will be impossible for us either. We would soon develop the same language; the language of faith, (2 Corinthians 4:13). The enemy will never be able to prevent us from accomplishing every objective.
I pray today for a spirit of "togetherness" to cover the body of Christ. When this happens, we will not seek to build a tower but will be building power; power that overcomes any obstacle or challenge presented to us.
The Holy Spirit always comes where there is one accord among the saints.
